She is a trained physician diabetologist with a PhD in Clinical Sciences. She completed postdoctoral studies at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) where she focused on diabetes research among the Pima Indians. Dr. Dabelea brings decades of research experience in the field of pediatric diabetes and leadership in the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth study by serving as the national study co-chair, and Colorado site PI for the SEARCH study and several ancillary studies. Her surveillance experience includes development of advanced case-finding techniques, identify reconciliation algorithms for de-duplication, case validation studies and advanced analytic methods to evaluate biases present in surveillance cohorts. Before joining the faculty at the University of Colorado she had a decade of experience as an applied epidemiologist at the state and federal level.

About Our Center

The Lifecourse Epidemiology of Adiposity & Diabetes (LEAD) Center is a research and training center at the Colorado School of Public Health. Our mission is to conduct research into the lifecourse health consequences of exposures that increase the risk, and accelerate the onset, of adiposity (obesity) and diabetes. The LEAD Center was established in 2015 on the University of Colorado (CU) Anschutz Medical Campus through a joint collaboration among the Colorado School of Public Health, the CU School of Medicine and its Department of Pediatrics, and Children’s Hospital Colorado.
